UK Ends Permanent Asylum, Shifts to Temporary Refugee Status

LONDON — The United Kingdom has announced a radical overhaul of its asylum system, ending the long-standing policy of granting permanent settlement to refugees.

In a major policy shift set to be unveiled on Monday, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is expected to declare that individuals granted asylum will now receive only temporary permission to stay.

The move is a central part of the government’s strategy to deter illegal migration and reduce the number of asylum claims, particularly those arriving via small boat crossings across the English Channel.

Under the new plan, the status of approved asylum seekers will be subject to regular review. They will be expected to return to their home countries once the UK government deems the situation there is safe, moving away from the current system which creates a path to citizenship.

“The public expects a firm but fair asylum system,” Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is expected to say.

“Our new approach will provide protection to those who genuinely need it, but on a temporary basis. This is a crucial step to break the business model of people-smuggling gangs and control our borders.”

Currently, individuals granted refugee status in the UK are given permission to stay for five years, after which they can apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) and eventually seek British citizenship.

Critics have condemned the policy. Enver Solomon, CEO of the Refugee Council, stated,

“This decision will create a shadow class of refugees living in perpetual uncertainty. How can someone rebuild their life, secure a job, or integrate into a community when they are always looking over their shoulder, fearing the next review and potential removal?”

The government already operates several temporary protection schemes, such as those for Ukrainians fleeing the war, which were initially granted for three years and later extended.

The new policy is expected to apply to all new asylum claims processed after its implementation.
