Senior MDC/CCC Officials Defect to ZANU-PF in High-Profile Move

In a significant political realignment, a group of immediate past and current senior executives and former Members of Parliament from the MDC/CCC opposition family have officially defected to the ruling ZANU-PF party.

The officials were formally received by the party’s National Political Commissar, Mike Machacha, and his deputy, Winston Shamu, in a ceremony at the ZANU-PF Headquarters on Friday, November 14, 2025.

The group includes several prominent figures with deep roots in the opposition movement. Among them are former MP for Gokwe-Kana, Blessing Chebundo, who was also a key official in the CCC; former Pumula-Luveve MP Albert Mhlanga; and Gandi Mudzingwa, the former Personal Assistant to the late opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai. Other notable defectors include former Zaka West MP Festus Dumbu, former Entumbane-Makandeni MP Dingilizwe Tshuma, and former MDC South Africa strategist Tapiwa Madondo.

The move represents a major coup for the ruling party and a substantial blow to the opposition structures. While ZANU-PF heralded the event as a testament to its inclusivity, the defection has sparked debate about the motivations behind such a shift.

In a statement during the reception, National Political Commissar Mike Machacha welcomed the new members, stating,

“The revolutionary party ZANU-PF is the home for all Zimbabweans. We welcome these comrades who have decided to join the national development agenda under the leadership of His Excellency, President Emmerson Mnangagwa.”

The event has drawn mixed reactions from the public and political commentators. Some view it as a positive step towards national unity, while others question the underlying motives. A political analyst who spoke to Zim GBC News on condition of anonymity noted,

“When long-standing opposition figures find comfort in the ruling party, it raises questions about the current political landscape and whether this signifies a genuine ideological shift or a pragmatic realignment of interests.”

The defection of such high-profile members is expected to have considerable implications for the political dynamics in their former strongholds and for the opposition’s cohesion ahead of future electoral processes.
