BULAWAYO – The Entumbane suburb is on high alert after a third drinking establishment was targeted by robbers in a 24-hour crime wave, with the latest incident seeing thieves escape with an assortment of alcoholic beverages after threatening a security guard with a knife.
The robbery occurred in the early hours of the morning at Gibixhegu beerhall, popularly known as koHerbert.
According to police, three men jumped over the perimeter wall, subdued the security guard, and broke into the bar.
“The accused persons tied the hands and legs of the security guard with wire. They then broke a burglar bar door padlock with an unknown object before forcing open the locked door to gain entry into the bar,” said acting Bulawayo police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu.
The suspects fled with seven bottles of Two Keys Whiskey, nine bottles of Gilbert Gin, three bottles of Viceroy, a bottle of Gordon’s Whiskey, 20 Star brands beers, and an Itel cellphone, all valued at US$140.
“Investigations are in progress and police appeal to members of the public with information that may lead to the arrest of the accused persons to report at any nearest police station,” Ast Insp Ndlovu added.
The bar’s proprietor, Herbert Ndebele, expressed shock at the breach, noting that the compromised door was considered the most secure point of the establishment.
“When I came in here security from both the city council and later a private security company said this door was the most secure point. I was advised to reinforce the other points,” said Ndebele.
He credited a private security reaction squad with preventing greater losses.
“When they broke in, the alarm system went off and alerted the reaction squad. Had it not been for that, they could have taken a lot,” Ndebele stated.
The incident marks the third such robbery in the suburb within a single day, raising concerns among local business owners and residents.
