Tanzanian President Launches Inquiry Into Post-Election Killings, Urges Leniency for Protesters

DAR ES SALAAM – Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced the formation of a commission of inquiry to investigate the killings of protesters by security forces during the recent election period, marking a significant response to international and domestic outcry.

The announcement follows the October 29 election, which saw President Hassan re-elected with 98 percent of the vote, according to the national electoral commission.

However, the poll was marred by allegations of rigging and government repression, which sparked days of violent protests. Opposition groups and human rights organisations reported that hundreds were killed in a brutal crackdown by security forces, which occurred alongside a nationwide internet blackout.

In her inaugural speech to parliament since the election, President Hassan expressed sorrow over the events.

“I am deeply saddened by the incident. I offer my condolences to all the families who lost their loved ones,” she stated.

In a move that signals a potential shift in approach, President Hassan also instructed police and security forces to exercise leniency towards the hundreds of young protesters who were arrested and charged with treason—an offence that carries the death penalty in Tanzania.

She attributed the youth’s involvement in the unrest to “peer pressure, incitement and online wave,” rather than malicious intent.

“For those who were just following the wave, let them be counselled and released,” President Hassan directed.

Addressing the nation’s youth, she added a parental admonition:

“If we, your parents, had been tempted to do what you have done today, this country wouldn’t achieve the progress you see today. I strongly urge you, my sons and daughters, this nation is yours. Don’t allow yourselves to be incitement to destroy your own country.”

The formation of the inquiry commission and the call for the release of some detainees will be closely watched as Tanzania navigates the aftermath of one of its most contentious electoral periods.
