HARARE – Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has thrown his weight behind Zimbabwe’s call for the removal of illegal sanctions, declaring that the restrictive measures continue to hinder the country’s economic progress and regional development.

The Zambian leader made the remarks during the inaugural Zimbabwe-Zambia Bi-National Commission (BNC) held at the Harare International Conference Centre on Thursday, where he was warmly welcomed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

In a significant diplomatic gesture, President Hichilema stated,

“Zambia stands in solidarity with Zimbabwe regarding the sanctions. These measures not only affect Zimbabwe but hinder regional integration and development. Their removal is crucial for the prosperity of both our nations.”

The elevation from a Joint Permanent Commission to a full Bi-National Commission marks a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries.

“Today in Harare, we marked an important milestone with the elevation of our cooperation framework,” President Hichilema announced.

“This step opens a new chapter in our partnership, and our discussions covered trade, investment, infrastructure, energy, public health, and regional cooperation in a positive and constructive atmosphere.”

The commission yielded several breakthrough agreements, particularly in the energy sector. Zimbabwe announced it will scrap transit duties on petroleum products starting November 27, 2025, as part of its 2026 National Budget.

“We welcomed Zimbabwe’s decision to scrap transit duties on petroleum products,” President Hichilema confirmed.

“Our teams will continue technical work on this until March 2026. We also agreed on arrangements that will support Zambia’s electricity imports through Zimbabwe.”

The two leaders committed to accelerating several key joint projects, including the Victoria Falls-Livingstone One-Stop Border Post, the Batoka Gorge Hydropower Project, and the Joint Management Plan for the World Heritage Site.

Earlier in the day, President Hichilema visited the Museum of African Liberation, accompanied by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Professor Amon Murwira, highlighting the shared historical ties between the two nations.

Emphasizing the special relationship between the neighboring countries, President Hichilema remarked,

“Zimbabwe and Zambia we are one. Zambia and Zimbabwe are like Siamese twins, and our meetings have renewed confidence in the future of our cooperation.”

The successful commission signals a new era of enhanced cooperation between the two nations, with both presidents expressing commitment to deepening economic integration and regional collaboration.
