CHIREDZI – The parents of four-year-old Obey Chabata are making a desperate public appeal for financial assistance to cover essential blood tests needed for their son’s corrective surgery. Obey suffers from a severe medical condition that requires him to defecate through a temporary opening in his stomach.
The young boy requires US$210 to undergo blood tests at Mashoko Christian Hospital in Bikita. These tests are crucial to determine if he is fit for a surgical procedure that would restore normal anal function.
Obey’s father, Ask Chabata, confirmed to Zim GBC News that the family has exhausted all its resources, leaving them unable to cover the medical costs.
“We are appealing for financial assistance for my son to undergo tests to determine whether he is ready for the next surgery. I have exhausted my resources and need assistance,” a distressed Chabata said.
Obey previously underwent an anoplasty—a reconstructive anal surgery—at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital in August. The current opening on his stomach, a stoma, was created during that initial procedure to allow waste to pass. The upcoming surgery aims to reverse this, but his path to the operating table is blocked by his low blood count and the cost of the necessary pre-operative tests.
Compounding the family’s struggle is the cost of Obey’s ongoing medication. “Obey is taking Orofer, a medication to improve his hemoglobin levels… The medication costs US$5 and the family is again struggling to buy the medication,” Chabata added.
Well-wishers are being urged to come forward and assist the Chabata family in this time of need.
