PRETORIA – Prominent Zimbabwean opposition figure Job Sikhala is currently detained in Pretoria, South Africa, following his arrest on allegations of possessing explosives, in an incident his supporters are decrying as a coordinated setup by the Zimbabwean regime.
According to a detailed account from his wife, Mai Sikhala, the former Zengeza West MP was arrested on Tuesday night under circumstances she describes as “highly suspicious and orchestrated.”
The incident unfolded after Sikhala attended a meeting. A host at the gathering reportedly asked to check something in Sikhala’s car, taking the keys and disappearing for approximately thirty minutes.
“The host returned and suggested everyone leave as it was getting late,” Mai Sikhala told Zim GBC News.
“Job got into the car he was using, and as they were driving, police stopped them and searched the vehicle. That is when they claimed to have found planted explosives.”
Sikhala was subsequently taken into custody and is currently being held at a local police station in Pretoria.
In response to the arrest, a legal team has been swiftly mobilized. Zimbabwean lawyers have been dispatched to South Africa to assist with the case, working alongside a team of South African attorneys already engaged on the matter.
This event has sent shockwaves through political circles, with many of Sikhala’s allies viewing it as a brazen extension of political persecution beyond Zimbabwe’s borders. A source close to the opposition stated,
“This shows how the regime is desperately networking with regional bodies to fight those who are opposed to the corrupt and illegal system in Zimbabwe. They cannot tolerate dissent, even when it is expressed abroad.”
The allegations have not yet been proven in a court of law. South African police authorities are expected to release an official statement on the arrest later today.
