In a move aimed at reducing accommodation costs for lawmakers, the government has acquired the iconic Monomotapa Crowne Plaza hotel through the Public Service Pension Fund, designating it for the use of Members of Parliament.

Finance Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube, announced the acquisition to legislators during a pre-budget seminar in Bulawayo on Wednesday. The 182-bed hotel in central Harare was previously owned by the African Sun group.

“Did we ever tell the MPs that we bought them a hotel? If you allow me, I’m going to announce today that we have bought you a hotel. It’s Monomotapa Hotel,” Minister Ncube revealed.

He elaborated that the initiative is designed to enhance the comfort and convenience of MPs during parliamentary sessions and significant national events.

“This strategic move is aimed at ensuring the comfort and convenience of legislators during parliamentary sessions and national events, while also reducing accommodation costs previously incurred through private bookings,” Ncube stated.

While the primary function will be to house MPs, the Finance Minister indicated that the hotel would also operate commercially. He hinted at a dual-purpose model where the facility would generate its own revenue for upkeep and returns for the pension fund.

“We will now come up with a scheme of how it can be utilised for the benefit of MPs. When you’re not using it, it can earn revenue for its upkeep,” Ncube said, though specific operational details were not immediately disclosed.

A landmark in the capital, the Monomotapa Hotel is renowned for its unique architecture, which draws inspiration from the ancient Kingdom of Monomotapa. Its prime location next to the Harare Gardens makes it one of the city’s most recognizable establishments.
