A powerful new voice has emerged from the City of Kings, using the timeless art of poetry to speak for those who bleed in silence.
Fiona John, a young and gifted writer, has released her debut poetry collection titled Reflections of a Soul, a raw and emotional odyssey through trauma, love, healing, and identity.
Described as “a mirror for the unseen and a safe space for the broken,” the book was born out of profound personal silence.
John reveals that her creative journey, first sparked during her school days and reignited during the solitude of lockdown, was ultimately reshaped by a tragic accident that changed the course of her life, a story she has long kept private.
“I whispered not to the world,” John confesses, explaining how the fear of judgment taught her that “silence is safer.”
“I just bled in silence, and my pen screamed for me,” she adds, a poignant line that became the central theme of her collection.
For John, the pen became both weapon and shield.
“Because in this world, no one listens. They only crown themselves God over your story and pass judgment. So only the pen became my armour.”
Reflections of a Soul is more than poetry; it is an act of resilience, a testament to survival and the healing power of words.
For John, writing became a form of unsilent therapy and paper, her sanctuary.
“She’s the only friend who’s always ready to listen,” John says of her pen, contrasting it with the weariness she sensed from others.
“People get tired of hearing, ‘It’s her again with her pain.’ So I just let my soul reflect on paper.”
The result is a collection that is both deeply personal and universally resonant, promising readers “real stories, bold emotions, and a legacy for generations.”
Her work seeks to be a voice for the voiceless, particularly for young people and women of Bulawayo and beyond, who have endured pain in quiet solitude.
A nominee for the Zimbabwe Talent Show Award, Fiona John is no stranger to the spotlight. Yet with this publication, she shifts from the stage to the page, from performance to permanence.
Her message is one of courage, shared experience, and unwavering strength: a call for all who have suffered in silence to reclaim their voices.
