The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has released the 2025-2026 seasonal rainfall forecast, warning of a delayed and erratic start to the rainy season, particularly in November.

The forecast raises concern for farmers, communities, and water management authorities as climate variability continues to impact the country’s rainfall patterns.

According to the MSD, the initial part of the season – October through November – will likely be drier than usual, with rainfall expected to improve gradually from December. However, northern provinces may remain dry even later into the season.

“Southern and western parts of Zimbabwe are forecast to receive normal to above-normal rainfall during the October to December period,” reads the report. “In contrast, northern regions including parts of Mashonaland provinces are expected to receive normal to below-normal rainfall.”

Temperature patterns will also shift, with warmer-than-average conditions expected in October and November, followed by cooler temperatures in December.

Key Forecast Highlights:

  • October–November 2025: Dry and erratic start, warmer-than-usual temperatures.
  • December 2025: Cooler conditions with improved rainfall mainly in the south and west.
  • January–March 2026: Continued normal to above-normal rainfall in the south; potential below-normal rains in the north.

The forecast has significant implications for agriculture, especially rain-fed farming which is heavily dependent on timely and consistent rainfall.

Agricultural experts are advising farmers to delay planting until consistent rains begin, and to consider drought-tolerant crops in the northern regions.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife is urging stakeholders in agriculture, water, health, and disaster preparedness sectors to use the forecast for early planning.
