BULAWAYO —The Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP) has publicly condemned the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) for its ongoing interference and suppression of democratic activities, alleging that these actions are carried out under the instruction of the ruling ZANU PF government.
In a press statement released on October 28, MRP leaders expressed outrage over the violent disruption of two planned press conferences meant to address the controversial extension of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term to 2030.
These events, scheduled at Sapes Trust in Harare and the Bulawayo Club in Bulawayo, aimed to unite opposition political parties and civic organizations in rejecting what they termed an illegal and unconstitutional move.
“The cowardly acts of intimidation we have witnessed today demonstrate the extent to which this regime is willing to go to silence dissenting voices,”
said MRP President Cde Thembisani Mfulongatshi Mpofu.
“This is not just an attack on our organizations; it is an attack on democracy itself.”
In Bulawayo, heavily armed anti-riot police and Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) operatives blocked access to the venue, dispersing attendees before the conference could commence.
Meanwhile, in Harare, the Sapes Trust offices were bombed just hours before the event, preventing it from taking place.
“This blatant violation of our rights to assemble and express our views cannot be tolerated,”
Mpofu added.
“Instead of wasting public resources on term extensions, the government should be addressing pressing issues that affect the citizens.”
The MRP outlined several critical issues that they believe the government is neglecting, including the implementation of devolution of power, justice for the victims of the Gukurahundi genocide, the chronic water crisis in Bulawayo, and deteriorating health and education sectors.
“The people of Mthwakazi will not be silenced,”
Mpofu emphasized, expressing solidarity with all citizens who oppose tyranny and constitutional violations.
“We are committed to the struggle for peace, justice, and self-determination.”
The MRP has called on the international community, human rights organizations, and regional bodies such as SADC and the African Union to take note of the escalating repression in Zimbabwe and to hold the government accountable for its actions.
As tensions rise, the MRP’s determination to resist political oppression remains unwavering, urging all citizens to continue speaking out against undemocratic practices.
“For peace and justice in our lifetime,”
Mpofu concluded, rallying support for a brighter future for the people of Mthwakazi.
