A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officer has appeared in court facing criminal abuse of duty charges after he allegedly sold a cache of official police uniforms, including riot gear, to a colleague for US$1,000.
Shamain Dzingai Muteswa (34), who is based at ZRP Fife Avenue Flat Mkushi Academy in Harare, was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa.
The court heard that the case came to light after a fellow police officer, Justice Chasiya, was arrested on October 23, 2025, for his involvement in the illicit trade and subsequently implicated Muteswa as his supplier.
According to court papers, Chasiya had approached Muteswa requesting assistance in obtaining police uniforms. The state, represented by Christopher Lloyd Tarenyika, alleged that Muteswa then supplied Chasiya with 40 riot police trousers, 50 Support Unit (STU) caps, and 20 grey police shirts.
“Muteswa supplied Justice Chasiya with the requested police uniform and was paid US$1,000,” a source familiar with the court proceedings told Zim GBC News.
Chasiya then reportedly went on to sell the uniforms to other police officers, leading to the discovery of the scheme and the subsequent arrests.
The complainant in the case is the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage. The case continues.
