HARARE – Four people sustained injuries on Saturday night after a truck they were in was struck by a train at the Mabvuku level crossing, highlighting ongoing safety concerns at railway crossings.
According to the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), the accident occurred when the truck driver failed to heed warnings of the approaching train. The injured individuals were promptly transported to Parirenyatwa Hospital for medical attention.
The incident took place near a traffic interchange currently under construction, a spot where the NRZ and its partners have been conducting weekly safety awareness campaigns.
In a statement, the NRZ expressed concern over the accident, reiterating its appeals to motorists.
“We continue to urge drivers to exercise extreme caution when approaching level crossings,” an NRZ spokesperson said. “Ignoring signals places lives at immense risk.”
This collision adds to a worrying trend of railway accidents in the first half of 2025. Official statistics indicate that ten pedestrians have been hit by trains, resulting in four fatalities and six serious injuries. Furthermore, 13 level crossing accidents have been recorded, causing injuries to 13 people.
Authorities cite common causes for these incidents, including pedestrians walking or exercising on railway tracks, motorists disregarding level crossing signals, and distractions from mobile phones and headphones.
