Opposition Activist ‘Madzibaba VeShanduko’ Remanded in Custody on Incitement Charges

HARARE – Opposition activist Godfrey Karembera, popularly known as Madzibaba VeShanduko, was remanded in custody on Tuesday after appearing before Harare magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai facing a charge of incitement to participate in a public gathering with intent to cause public violence.

The charges are linked to a planned anti-government demonstration, the “One Million Men March,” which was called for by war veteran Blessed “Bombshell” Runesu Geza.

Karembera, through his lawyer Paida Saurombe, challenged the lawfulness of his arrest and his placement on remand. Saurombe alleged that his client was assaulted by police during the arrest.

“The arrest of my client was unlawful,” Saurombe told the court.

“We have tendered images as evidence showing the injuries on his back as a result of the assault.”

The State, however, alleges that on October 16, 2025, Karembera and accomplices still at large connived to incite the public to participate in the march, scheduled for October 17 at Robert Gabriel Mugabe Square and Africa Unity Square in Harare. The protest was called in response to allegations by Geza, who in YouTube videos accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa of betrayal, corruption, and looting.

According to court papers, Karembera and his accomplices printed and distributed fliers in the suburbs of Highfield, Glen View, and Budiriro. The fliers bore messages such as;

“STOP THE LOOTING,” “ZIMBABWE IS NOT FOR SALE,” and “ONE MILLION MAN MARCH.”

Police investigations led them to intercept a vehicle along Patrenda Road in Glen View, where they recovered 7,200 flyers. One suspect, Malvern Mavhere, was arrested at the scene, while Karembera and two others allegedly fled.

The State further alleged that on the day of the planned protest, Karembera recorded a video inciting the public to gather at Africa Unity Square and posted it on several WhatsApp groups and on Facebook.

The recovered fliers were submitted to the court as exhibits. Magistrate Kuhudzai remanded Karembera in custody to Wednesday for a bail application.
