To celebrate its 30th anniversary, MultiChoice is bringing back a beloved tradition in South African television “Open Time” originally introduced with the launch of DStv in 1995.

The once-popular feature will return briefly in November, offering all DStv decoder users full Premium access for one weekend. From 7 to 9 November 2025, active satellite subscribers will be able to enjoy movies, sports, and entertainment across all Premium channels at no extra cost.

The initiative appears to be part of a broader marketing push aimed at upselling existing customers to higher-tier packages and attracting new subscribers to the platform.

This announcement follows closely after Groupe Canal+ completed its acquisition of MultiChoice Group. The deal has triggered leadership changes as the French broadcaster begins reshaping the company’s direction.

MultiChoice says the Open Time weekend aligns with a busy sports calendar, featuring high-profile events such as the Springboks vs France rugby match, Manchester City vs Liverpool, and the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Adding to the nostalgia, the campaign will feature appearances by well-known personalities from the early days of DStv, including Ashley Hayden, Scot Scott, and Doreen Morris, who were once familiar faces during M-Net Open Time.

Open Time introduced many South Africans to subscription TV when DStv launched in 1995.

Reviving it honours that legacy and reflects commitment to making entertainment more accessible.

In addition to the promotional weekend, MultiChoice is cutting decoder prices starting 1 November. Retail prices will drop by 30%, while customers buying through the new DStv online store can expect discounts of over 40%.

Premium subscribers will also receive added benefits in November and December, including two extra all-device streams, a dedicated concierge support line, and enhanced rewards such as BoxOffice rentals, VIP event access, and sports-related travel prizes.

The Open Time promotion applies only to decoder customers. Streaming-only subscribers won’t receive Premium channel access but can still participate in expanded rewards promotions.
