GWERU – Two people were killed and nineteen others injured in a devastating head-on collision between a Zhongtong bus and a Toyota Hilux on the Gweru-Zvishavane Road this past Sunday evening, with police confirming a stray cow was the catalyst for the accident.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) reported that the crash occurred near the 10-kilometre peg at approximately 8:30 PM.
According to preliminary investigations, the bus, which was carrying 45 passengers, first struck a cow that had wandered onto the roadway.
“A Zhongtong Bus carrying 45 passengers hit a cow resulting in the bus encroaching onto the oncoming lane,” a ZRP spokesperson stated, outlining the sequence of events that led to the catastrophic collision with the oncoming Toyota Hilux.
The impact was fatal for the two occupants of the Hilux, who were pronounced dead at the scene. The nineteen injured bus passengers were rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were transported to the Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem examinations.
The ZRP has launched a full investigation into the incident, which has once again raised concerns about livestock control and road safety on the country’s highways.
