Police Launch Manhunt for Activist ‘Madzibaba Veshanduko’

HARARE – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched a nationwide manhunt for opposition political activist Godfrey Karembera, widely known as ‘Madzibaba Veshanduko’, who escaped arrest during a dramatic high-speed chase in the capital.

Karembera (47) and his accomplice, Kudzai Weston Saruwaka, are wanted for allegedly distributing fliers calculated to incite public unrest.

In a statement over the weekend, ZRP national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the incident and appealed to the public for assistance.

“Police are appealing for information leading to the arrest of Godfrey Karembera (47), popularly known as Madzibaba Eshanduko, and Kudzai Weston Saruwaka, who fled from officers during a high-speed chase while allegedly distributing fliers in Machipisa, Glen View, and Budiriro,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

He added that the two men “face charges under the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.” Authorities allege their actions were linked to unsanctioned protests instigated by fugitive war veteran Blessed Geza.

This is not the first time Karembera, a staunch supporter of former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa, has encountered legal troubles.

In April of this year, his Guruve home was petrol-bombed by unknown assailants. While Karembera was not present, his 17-year-old son, Laxmore, sustained injuries while rescuing his two younger siblings from the blaze, which destroyed the family property.

His history with the law also includes a 2022 arrest in Harare for allegedly calling police officers dogs and for wearing the yellow-coloured clothing that was the theme of the CCC party.

The police search for the activist continues.
