MUTARE – Vice President Dr. Constantino Chiwenga delivered a landmark address at the Zanu PF National Conference in Mutare, framing the gathering as one of “reflection and recommitment” in a speech widely interpreted as a pointed critique of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s perceived political ambitions.
Speaking in a City symbolic as a gateway for liberation war fighters, Chiwenga invoked the legacy of the struggle to underscore themes of selfless service and collective purpose. He directly addressed the party’s Vision 2030, a project closely associated with President Mnangagwa, redefining it as a national, rather than a personal, endeavor.
“Vision 2030 is about genuine economic empowerment, equipping all our people with the means to produce,” Chiwenga stated, adding that it “must be understood as a national covenant, not a political campaign.”
The Vice President’s speech took a profound historical turn with the invocation of the late liberation hero, General Josiah Magamba Tongogara. He reminded delegates that Tongogara fought on “knowing he would not see a liberated Zimbabwe,” framing this as a model of selfless leadership.
“They perished in hope,” Chiwenga said of the fallen combatants, “that their sacrifices would benefit future generations.”
He further asserted that current leaders “are not the alpha and omega of Zimbabwe’s journey,” a remark seen as a direct challenge to any moves towards extending Presidential term limits.
Chiwenga called for integrity and selfless stewardship, declaring,
“Ours is to carry forward the torch passed to us by those who gave everything without expectation of reward.”
The carefully crafted address, which drew a sharp ideological line within the party, was met with a notable silence from the assembled delegates, marking a significant moment of political tension at a conference otherwise designed to project unity.
