MUTARE – President Emmerson Mnangagwa Saturday commissioned two major development projects in Mutare – a state-of-the-art National Pharmaceutical Warehouse and the US$23 million Mega Market Flour Milling Plant – marking significant strides in enhancing the nation’s healthcare system and food security.
The dual commissioning, conducted on the sidelines of the 22nd ZANU PF National People’s Conference, represents a major boost for Manicaland province’s infrastructure and economic development.
Healthcare Transformation Through Strategic Partnership
The US$6.96 million National Pharmaceutical Warehouse, constructed through a collaboration between the Ministry of Health and Child Care, United Nations Development Programme, and the Global Fund, stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to revolutionizing healthcare delivery.
President Mnangagwa emphasized the facility’s critical role in the nation’s health sector, stating,
“The Mutare NatPharm warehouse facility attests to my Government’s current progress to facilitate reliable access to essential medicines and health commodities. These are crucial in reducing mortality and morbidity, improving population health and supporting the health delivery system.”
The President highlighted the remarkable growth in pharmaceutical infrastructure under the Second Republic, noting,
“Since 2018, there has been a 56 percent increase in the number of pharmaceutical entities from nine in 2020 to the current 14.”
Strategic Location Enhances Medical Distribution
The new warehouse’s positioning along the Beira Corridor and proximity to the Port of Beira presents significant logistical advantages for medical supply chains. The facility is designed to serve over 335 health facilities across Manicaland, featuring advanced storage capacity that holds four times more medicine than the previous facility.
“The strategic location of the warehouse along the Beira Corridor presents opportunities for increased efficiencies to reduce supply bottlenecks,” President Mnangagwa noted, while directing the Health Ministry to ensure similar warehouses are constructed in other provinces according to plan.
Boosting Food Security and Industrialization
At the Mega Market Flour Milling Plant commissioning, the President commended the company’s contribution to national development, stating,
“The investment by Mega Market in the Flour Milling Plant comes at an opportune time when our country continues to realize mega wheat harvests. Growing milling capacity is of great significance.”
The US$23 million facility, which enjoys National Project Status, is expected to create employment opportunities, reduce import bills, and contribute to GDP growth.
“Under the Second Republic, our country has been characterised by accelerated modernisation and industrialisation,” President Mnangagwa affirmed.
“The manufacturing sector, in particular, has seen increased capacity utilisation and an ever-expanding industrial base both in terms of diversity and size.”
The dual projects represent significant milestones in the government’s pursuit of universal health coverage and food self-sufficiency, aligning with the objectives outlined in the National Development Strategy 1.
