MASVINGO – A 49-year-old Matsamba Village man died in a shocking apparent suicide on Tuesday afternoon after a confrontation with his in-laws over his estranged wife.
The incident, which has left the community reeling, occurred at around 5:15 PM on October 8 at the homestead of Phillip Zinjeke’s mother-in-law under Chief Nyakunhuwa.
According to police, Zinjeke arrived at the home demanding the return of his estranged wife, 41-year-old Edith Gwezuva. He was reportedly holding an open okapi knife pressed against his own neck.
ZRP Masvingo Province acting spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Masauso Patinyu, confirmed the details to Zim GBC News.
“Zinjeke visited his mother-in-law’s homestead demanding the return of his estranged wife. Upon arrival, he was holding an okapi knife which he pressed on his neck, threatening to stab himself,” said Assistant Inspector Patinyu.
The alarming scene prompted his mother-in-law to flee to a neighbour’s home to seek assistance. However, upon their return moments later, they discovered Zinjeke lying in a pool of blood with a severe neck wound. The okapi knife was found beside him.
Police were swiftly called to the scene and the body was transported to Ndanga District Hospital for a post-mortem. Investigations are ongoing.
Assistant Inspector Patinyu used the tragic event to urge the public to seek peaceful resolutions and professional help during times of emotional distress.
“This tragic case adds to the growing number of suicidal incidents being reported across the province. We are urging communities to seek counselling and peaceful resolution of domestic disputes. There is no need for violence,” he stated.
He further emphasised,
“We continue to encourage people to talk to trusted individuals, church leaders, or counsellors during times of conflict or mental distress.”
The case is currently being treated as a suspected suicide linked to the domestic separation.
