KADOMA – A man from Chegutu became the unexpected star of the Kadoma Odyssey Music Festival this weekend after he was filmed singing and dancing from a precarious perch high in a gum tree, overlooking the main stage.
The viral moment, which has captivated social media users across Zimbabwe, occurred during the highly anticipated festival which featured headline acts such as Winky D, Busy Signal, and Alick Macheso. While thousands enjoyed the performances from the ground, the unidentified man secured a bird’s-eye view, his passionate rendition of songs and rhythmic movements turning him into an online sensation.
Festival-goer Tinashe Moyo, who captured the video, expressed a mixture of awe and concern.
“It was unbelievable. One moment we were watching the stage, the next we saw this figure dancing against the sky. He was completely lost in the music, but we were all praying he wouldn’t lose his balance. He embodied the free spirit of the festival, albeit in the most dramatic way.”
While many online have praised the man’s enthusiasm and ingenuity, his lofty position has also sparked a debate about his motives. With standard festival tickets priced at $20 and VIP access reaching $200, speculation is rife that he may have been seeking a creative way to enjoy the event.
“Look, times are tough for everyone,” commented another attendee, Farai Chidemo.
“If he couldn’t afford a ticket, you have to admire the hustle. He found a way to be part of the excitement without causing any trouble. He wanted a better view and he certainly got one.”
However, others believe the act was one of pure, unbridled fandom.
“This wasn’t about money; it was about passion,” argued local music fan Sharon Muchena.
“He was so moved by the music that he climbed towards the sound. He’s a symbol of how our music connects with people on a fundamental level. It was a performance in itself.”
Regardless of the reason, the “Chegutu Tree-Top Crooner” has cemented his place in the festival’s folklore, proving that for true music lovers, the desire to be part of the rhythm can lead to new heights.
