YAOUNDE – Cameroonians voted on Sunday in a presidential election that could see incumbent Paul Biya, the world’s oldest ruler at 92, extend his 43-year tenure amid economic challenges and a fragmented opposition.
Biya, who has led the Central African nation since 1982, faces challengers including former government spokesperson Issa Tchiroma, 76, who has garnered significant opposition support. The election comes as the country grapples with decades of economic stagnation and rising public discontent.
Under tight security, voters cast their ballots across the nation. In the capital Yaounde, voter Patrick Mbarga Mboa expressed hope for peaceful proceedings, stating,
“I hope peace and tranquillity will continue in the country after the election.”
However, many citizens voiced frustration with the current administration.
“For 43 years, Cameroonians have been suffering. There are no jobs,” said
Hassane Djbril, a driver in Yaounde’s Briqueterie neighbourhood. “We want change because the current government is dictatorial.”
Political analysts predict Biya will likely secure an eighth term, citing his control of state institutions and the divided opposition. Francois Conradie, lead political economist at Oxford Economics, noted,
“A divided opposition and the backing of a formidable electoral machine will, we predict, give the 92-year-old his eighth term.”
The election follows Biya’s 2008 abolition of presidential term limits and employs a single-round system that awards victory to the candidate with a simple majority. With just over 8 million registered voters, results are expected within 15 days.
