BULAWAYO\u2013 The AfriConfex Conference and Official Opening commenced today at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF), launching high-level discussions on Africa’s infrastructure future under the theme \u201cSmart Moves: Powering Zimbabwe\u2019s Infrastructure Evolution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Led by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development, Honourable Felix Mhona, the conference is focused on building integrated, climate-resilient, and sustainable infrastructure to drive economic growth across all sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event brings together policymakers, experts, and industry leaders for a dynamic exchange of ideas, setting a forward-thinking agenda for the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The opening session was attended by high-level representatives from various government ministries, including Honourable Judith Ncube, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Paul Nyathi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also in attendance were Engineer David Jana, Chief Director of Roads, and Dr. Engineer Farai Mavhiya, President of the Zimbabwe Construction Industry Association, who was represented by Ms. Marianne Mange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his opening remarks, Engineer David Jana welcomed the guest of honour, Honourable Felix Mhona, praising the Minister’s dedication to national development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur gathering today at AfriConfex 2025 is a testament to Honourable Minister Mhona\u2019s unwavering commitment to transforming our nation\u2019s infrastructure and transportation sector,\u201d said Engineer David Jana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking at the event, Minister Mhona emphasized the role of infrastructure as a catalyst for economic growth, poverty alleviation, and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cImagine infrastructure not merely as a physical asset, but as a transformation tool to breed resilience and unlock innovation, infrastructure is key to providing citizens with access to clean water,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The conference also focused into strategies outlined in Zimbabwe\u2019s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), including attracting foreign direct investment, upscaling private sector participation, and climate-proofing infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Key project highlights included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022The expansion and upgrading of Charles Prince Airport, which is soon to become a major international airport.
\u2022The construction of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway.
\u2022The development of Kariba International Airport.
\u2022A strategy where Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport will remain focused on community and regional flights, while Charles Prince Airport will handle larger international operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThese projects are being implemented in collaboration with the Airports Company of Zimbabwe and the Ministry of Lands, with an aim to complete them by mid-2026,\u201d Honourable Minister Mhona stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He concluded by affirming that \u201cZimbabwe\u2019s infrastructure revolution is not just about strength; it must be smart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The expo continues to bring together regional experts, investors, and stakeholders to discuss infrastructure resilience and sustainable, inclusive development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
