MUTARE \u2013 In a story that has captured the nation’s heart, 13-year-old Adrian Tavonga Gurumbadza is defying the odds by writing his Grade Seven ZIMSEC examinations from a hospital bed at St Joseph\u2019s Mission Hospital, while battling terminal cancer and holding onto one final wish: to meet First Lady Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Adrian was diagnosed with Wilm\u2019s Tumor in December 2023. After initial treatment, including a US$5,000 surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, the cancer has returned aggressively and is now incurable. Doctors have declared his condition terminal, and he is receiving palliative care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite being bedridden, unable to walk, and struggling to speak clearly, Adrian insisted on completing his national exams. ZIMSEC regulations prohibit home-based examinations, so the hospital ward became his examination hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI wish I could meet Mai Mnangagwa before I die,\u201d the boy murmured from his bed, his voice barely audible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His father, Wellington Gurumbadza, shared the family\u2019s heartbreaking journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt has been a stressful journey since my son was diagnosed with cancer. We have had to travel regularly from Mutare to Harare and back for two solid years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The family has sold nearly all their assets, including two residential stands and a Toyota Camry, to fund Adrian\u2019s treatment. Mr. Gurumbadza, who earns a net monthly salary of just US$39, revealed they are now homeless and living with relatives in Chikanga Phase Three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite missing the first two terms of Grade Six due to his illness, Adrian\u2019s academic brilliance shone through. School authorities confirmed he ranked among the top 10 out of 250 pupils by the end of the third term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe is a brilliant learner with the potential to achieve six units,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Adrian\u2019s final wish has remained constant throughout his ordeal, alongside his determination to complete his education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His story has touched many, with KidzCan Zimbabwe and local schools providing crucial support through fundraising and essential supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As Adrian continues his brave fight, his courage serves as a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and his family hopes his wish to meet the First Lady will be fulfilled in his remaining days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
