BULAWAYO \u2013 Three Bulawayo City Council (BCC) municipal police officers were attacked on Wednesday while conducting a clean-up operation along 5th Avenue in the Central Business District, leaving one officer with severe injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident was confirmed by the City’s Mayor, Councillor David Coltart, who strongly condemned the violence during a ceremony at the Large City Hall where he accepted a donation of 50 bins from Altcom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOne of our municipal police officers was severely injured trying to implement the rule of law and trying to clean up our city and that is unacceptable,\u201d Mayor Coltart stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf we want to take our city forward and have a vision for it becoming clean, healthy, attractive for investment and provide formal employment to those who are currently in informal employment, then we have to restore order.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Mayor called on law enforcement agencies to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe want law enforcement agencies to do whatever they can to identify the culprits and to bring them to book,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mayor Coltart also used the platform to appeal to the public, specifically calling out construction companies for illegal dumping, which he labelled an unacceptable practice that hinders the city’s progress. He urged citizens to support the council’s efforts to achieve smart city status by embracing self-discipline and a culture of cleanliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Drawing from a recent international trip, the Mayor highlighted a model for the city to emulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI recently went to Osaka\u2026 a city of 18 million people\u2026 I did not see in the five days I was there a single bin in the city but I also did not see a single plastic bottle or refuse on the ground and that is because the people are self-disciplined,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Mayor expressed gratitude for the recent philanthropic support from the business community, including the 50 bins from Altcom and a previous donation of 60 refuse bins worth US$6,900 from Masters Paint and Hardware, stating that such partnerships are vital for the city’s development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
