MAZOWE \u2013 A rescue operation at Umsasa Farm in Mamini, Mazowe, ended in heartbreak this weekend after the bodies of four artisanal miners were recovered from a collapsed mine shaft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The tragedy occurred on September 28, 2025, when the 20-meter-deep shaft gave way, trapping five miners underground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After a complex rescue effort hampered by unstable ground, emergency crews retrieved the four bodies, which have since been taken to Concession District Hospital for post-mortem examinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has identified the deceased as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u00b7 Alton Sibanda (25) of Zhombe
\u00b7 Prince Gobvu (19) of Mhondoro
\u00b7 Kenneth Mhandire (24) of Eastview, Harare
\u00b7 Tapiwa Meskano (26) of Chikwaka, Goromonzi<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities have confirmed that one miner remains unaccounted for as search efforts continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In an official statement, ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the devastating development and urged for greater safety measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that four bodies were retrieved from the mine shaft,\u201d Commissioner Nyathi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe continue to urge mine operators and artisanal miners to strictly adhere to safety protocols and conduct regular inspections to prevent avoidable loss of life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident has once again cast a spotlight on the perilous working conditions within- Zimbabwe’s informal mining sector, where many operate without formal licenses and with limited safety oversight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
