HWANGE \u2013 Zimbabwe\u2019s coal sector is showing significant signs of resurgence, with Hwange-based Miner, Mutagech Logistics, ramping up production to capitalize on growing regional demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The mine is now producing approximately 60,000 tonnes of coal per month. A substantial portion of this output\u2014up to 40,000 tonnes of high-value coking coal\u2014is targeted for export markets in South Africa and Zambia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Project Engineer Donald Nkosana highlighted the strategic importance of these exports for the national economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMost of our valuable coking coal is sold externally, bringing in much-needed foreign currency which supports the country\u2019s economic growth and Vision 2030 aspirations,\u201d Nkosana stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond its economic contribution, the project has become a critical source of employment in the Hwange district, creating nearly 300 jobs. The company reports that 80 percent of its workforce is sourced from surrounding villages in the Lukosi area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The impact on local livelihoods has been profound. Employees report that the stable income has enabled them to better support their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBecause of the employment here, we are now able to send our children to school as well as buy medications and other necessities at home,\u201d shared one local worker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The success at Mutagech Logistics aligns with national projections, as Zimbabwe\u2019s total coal output is forecast to rise by over 10 percent in 2025, exceeding six million tonnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This recovery underscores the mineral’s continued role in powering the national grid and supporting industrial development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
