In a stark and wide-ranging critique, prominent opposition figure and former Finance Minister Tendai Biti has declared that \u201cthe center is not holding\u201d in Zimbabwe, warning that the country is \u201ctethering on the brink\u201d due to what he describes as a failed national agenda and rampant state capture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Biti attributed the crisis primarily to government policy, stating,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe ill-fated & ill-thought 2030 Agenda has pushed the country to the edge. The disciples of this gospel of chaos must abandon it lest history will be vicious & unkind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He further alleged that governance has been hijacked by a dangerous clique, heightening national tensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLooting & the brazen capture of the palace by an overzealous, uncultured, uncouth, unprincipled cabal has heightened tensions & divisions,\u201d Biti claimed, adding that certain groups \u201cpose an existential threat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A third critical issue raised was the unresolved land question. Biti suggested that a significant part of the state views the current administration\u2019s policies \u201cas an enrichment exercise by the cabal & also a reversal of the land reform program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For ordinary citizens, Biti painted a grim picture of daily life, far removed from political machinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMeanwhile, far from the theater of madness, citizens suffocate from the fumes of huge poverty,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe economy has ground to a halt, arrested by liquidity & demand-side constraints. Companies are on their knees. Crime & drug abuse has become rampant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a solution, Biti called for a radical shift in the nation\u2019s direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA new consensus is the answer. One anchored on a new social contract, a new point of citizen engagement. A new constitutional order,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He concluded with a scathing assessment of the current administration and a plea for change:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe class of 2017 has failed and failed in absolute terms, but they must not take Zim down with them. We deserve better. A new Zimbabwe!!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
