{"id":9367,"date":"2025-09-22T08:49:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-22T08:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zimgbcnews.co.zw\/?p=9367"},"modified":"2025-09-22T08:49:00","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T08:49:00","slug":"parliament-raises-concerns-as-road-deaths-near-2000-annually","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/zimgbcnews.co.zw\/?p=9367","title":{"rendered":"Parliament Raises Concerns as Road Deaths Near 2,000 Annually"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dennis Lobuntu Ndlovu|Zim GBC News<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parliamentarians have voiced serious concerns over the worsening road safety situation, urging swift government action to enhance enforcement measures after revelations that nearly 2,000 lives are lost each year due to traffic accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Wednesday\u2019s Question and Answer session, Transport Minister Felix Mhona presented a stark assessment, blaming the majority of crashes on reckless driving, speeding, impatience, and an increasing number of inexperienced public transport operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mhona informed lawmakers that the government has already purchased speed detection devices and breathalysers to target drivers who operate vehicles while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe recognise that there are individuals who drive under the influence of drugs or intoxicating substances substances&#8221;, said Mhona<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We collaborate with the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, as well as the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID), who are expected to patrol the roads&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Yet, accidents sometimes occur shortly after passing those checkpoints,\u201d Mhona explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new regulations require drivers to be older than 30 years to qualify, changing from the previous minimum age limits of 21 or 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CCC MP Miriam Matinenga expressed worries about unlicensed drivers and unregistered vehicles freely operating on the nation\u2019s roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome individuals are driving without licences.
