Experts warn that this growing trend is weakening family ties and undermining communication.
‎
‎Digitalization has transformed how we live, but it is also reshaping how families interact. Parents and children may live under the same roof, yet often exist in separate digital worlds.
‎
‎There are increasing cases of loneliness, strained relationships, and reduced empathy among both children and adults. Even traditionally sacred moments, like mealtimes, are frequently interrupted by message alerts, videos, and endless scrolling.
‎
‎ Technology itself is not the problem, but rather its misuse. Families are encouraged to introduce “screen-free times” to restore meaningful conversations and shared experiences.
‎
‎ In the past, family gatherings played a vital role in shaping values. After meals, children would sit around their grandparents to listen to folktales that instilled respect, discipline, love, and unity. These traditions not only entertained but strengthened bonds and created a sense of belonging.
‎
‎Today, however, smartphones have replaced storytelling sessions, and mealtimes are often taken alone in bedrooms. Even young children are exposed to digital content early, a trend some experts link to premature habits and relationships far beyond their age.
‎
‎Unless families consciously balance technology with quality time, the erosion of traditional practices will continue to weaken the foundations of unity, love, and moral upbringing.
‎
‎Yet digitalization also brings undeniable conveniences and opportunities for families. Messaging apps and video calls improve communication, online learning provides access to knowledge for both children and parents, and digital tools simplify daily tasks like banking, shopping, and scheduling.
‎
‎Families can even bond through shared digital entertainment, such as watching movies or playing online games together.
‎
‎However, these same technologies can erode family bonds if not managed carefully. Excessive screen time reduces face-to-face interaction, leading to weaker emotional connections.
‎
‎Children and adults may become distracted even during meals or family activities, and parents often struggle to balance digital monitoring with trust. Overreliance on technology can also widen generation gaps, as younger family members adapt quickly while older ones may feel left out.
‎
‎In essence, digitalization is a double-edged sword for families. It can enhance communication, learning, and convenience, but if screens replace conversations and shared experiences, it can slowly weaken the closeness that binds family members together.
‎
‎The key lies in balance, leveraging digital tools while prioritizing real-world connection, ensuring that technology strengthens rather than diminishes family bonds.
‎
‎Digitalization offers families unprecedented convenience, learning opportunities, and ways to connect across distances.
‎
‎ Yet, when screens take precedence over conversations, shared experiences, and traditional practices, they risk eroding the very bonds that give families their strength.
‎
‎Striking a balance, embracing technology without letting it replace meaningful interactions, is essential for preserving love, unity, and emotional connection within the modern household.

Follow Zim GBC News for Updates
‎📱 WhatsApp/Hotline: +263 773 820 323
‎🌐 Website: www.zimgbcnews.co.zw
‎📘 Facebook: Zim GBC News
‎🐦 X (Twitter): @ZimGBCNews
‎📸 Instagram: @ZimGBCNews
‎▶️ YouTube: Zim GBC News
‎
‎ZimGBCNews | Global News On An African Perspective©2025

Sithembinkosi L Jiyanewww.zimgbcnews.co.zw OPINION ‎The rapid spread of digital technology, once celebrated for connecting people across the globe, is now being blamed for driving families further apart.‎‎ In many households,…

[110

post-9324","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-information-and-technology
["GET
