MUTARE \u2013 A devastating fire ripped through a garage in Mutare\u2019s Riverside area on Tuesday afternoon, reducing more than 50 vehicles to charred shells and causing millions in damages. Eyewitnesses and local mechanics are pointing fingers at City of Mutare council workers, alleging that a routine waste burn spiralled out of control and ignited the inferno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The blaze, which began near the Dairibord and Colcom facilities, rapidly engulfed the popular Mercedes-Benz repair workshop known locally as PaMaBenz or PaBhobho. Despite the swift response of the City of Mutare Fire Brigade, the intensity of the flames overwhelmed efforts to save the vehicles, specialized tools, and mechanical equipment inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One eyewitness, a mechanic at the garage, stated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe council workers were burning grass and rubbish right next to the garage. The wind picked up, and within minutes the fire was everywhere. They didn\u2019t have any control measures in place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident has sparked public outrage over the city\u2019s waste-management practices and the fire brigade\u2019s capacity to respond effectively. Social media platforms were flooded with criticism from residents questioning the safety of controlled burns during dry conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mutare City Council has not yet issued an official statement addressing the allegations. Business owners and affected customers, many of whom face financial ruin due to uninsured losses, are demanding accountability and compensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The City of Mutare Fire Brigade confirmed that the cause of the fire is under investigation. Meanwhile, community leaders are calling for a review of municipal protocols regarding waste disposal and fire prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
