HARARE \u2013 As schools prepare to reopen for the third term next week, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Torerai Moyo, has issued a firm assurance that the upcoming Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) examinations will be free from paper leaks, declaring the practice “a thing of the past.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In an exclusive interview on Wednesday, Minister Moyo expressed unwavering confidence in new security measures implemented to safeguard the integrity of national examinations. Grade 7 candidates are scheduled to begin writing in September, with O and A-Level examinations to follow later in the term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I’m 100 percent confident that come 2025 ZIMSEC examinations, which are starting this month, there won’t be any leakages because everything is set,” Minister Moyo stated emphatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Everything has been put in place to deal decisively with anyone who might wish or attempt to participate in the leakage.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Minister highlighted that the last major examination leakage occurred in 2022 involving a teacher in Matabeleland South, emphasizing that robust deterrent measures have since been established. A key innovation is the serialization of all examination scripts, enabling authorities to trace any leaks directly to their source using specialized software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While acknowledging that impersonation remains a concern, Minister Moyo issued a stern warning to potential offenders:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Those who engage in impersonation will face jail time. There will be no leniency.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Looking to the long term, the Minister pointed to the recently gazetted Zimbabwe School Examinations Council Amendment Bill as a comprehensive solution. The proposed legislation stipulates severe penalties, including up to five years’ imprisonment for candidates found guilty of malpractice. Institutions convicted of widespread irregularities face deregistration and will be required to cover the costs of providing alternative examination centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government’s strong stance comes as the nation seeks to restore confidence in its education system and ensure that examination results truly reflect students’ capabilities without the taint of corruption or malpractice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
