HARARE \u2013 In a decisive move to curb criminal activities, authorities have announced an immediate nationwide ban on tinted windows for all private vehicles and public transport, with exemptions only for government VIP and security cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The directive was issued by Provincial Affairs and Devolution Secretary Tafadzwa Muguti on Tuesday, who cited a alarming rise in crimes committed using vehicles with tinted windows, including a recent case where a grade seven girl was raped in an omnibus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAll provinces will enforce a complete ban on private vehicles and public transporters having tinted windows on their vehicles, except for government VIP and security vehicles all those manufactured with standard shades of tint,\u201d Muguti stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He emphasized that the measure directly responds to escalating security concerns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis follows an increase in crime in transportation vehicles especially mushikashika, armed robbers and other criminals and also the recent rape of a grade seven girl in an omnibus. So we will not be allowing any commuter omnibus to have tint.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Muguti issued a stern warning to the public, urging immediate compliance with the new regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTinted windows are not allowed in public vehicles and all of those of you who have tints where the police will not be able to see the people driving or passengers, please remove your tinted windows immediately or the police will do it for you or the vehicle will be impounded,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The announcement comes amid public outrage following the recent rape of a 13-year-old girl at the Rezende bus terminus in Harare, which prompted civil society organizations to petition the government for urgent safety measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
