MUREHWA \u2013 Police in Mashonaland East have arrested a 42-year-old man following allegations that he raped his seven-year-old niece and subsequently attempted to bribe her with vegetables to ensure her silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The case, which came to light through an anonymous tip-off, occurred last month but was only reported to the Murehwa Police Station last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Mashonaland East police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachii, the incident took place in a garden in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSometime in August this year, at around 0900 hours, the accused person, who is the complainant\u2019s uncle, asked her to accompany him to the garden to get some vegetables where he raped her,\u201d Insp Chazovachii stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAfter the act, he instructed the complainant not to reveal the matter to anyone and he gave her vegetables and told her to go back home,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The man also allegedly threatened the child to prevent her from speaking out about the assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Insp Chazovachii confirmed that police action was triggered by community vigilance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe police swiftly reacted and went to the scene after ZRP Murehwa received an anonymous tip-off that the accused person had sexually abused the complainant. The complainant was interviewed and she revealed the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The young victim was immediately referred to Murehwa Hospital for medical examinations and necessary support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The police spokesperson praised the role of the public in combating crime, highlighting the importance of community cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe hail community members who are always alerting the police whenever crimes are committed,\u201d Insp Chazovachii said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The suspect’s name has been withheld to protect the identity of the minor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
