In a significant crackdown on illicit mineral trafficking, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have intercepted 15.7 kilogrammes of gold worth approximately US$1.56 million, following a tip-off about a smuggling attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Acting on intelligence received on Tuesday, detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department’s Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit successfully tracked a Toyota Prado Land Cruiser suspected of carrying the contraband. The operation led to the arrest of three individuals allegedly involved in the smuggling ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The high-value seizure underscores the ongoing challenges the nation faces with mineral leakages. The recovered gold has since been handed over to the Fidelity Gold Refinery in Msasa for safekeeping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing to uncover the network behind this operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Investigations into the smuggling attempt are ongoing to identify other possible accomplices and prevent similar incidents in the future,” a police statement read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The bust comes against a backdrop of significant losses to the national economy. According to the International Crisis Group,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Zimbabwe loses about US$1.5-billion annually to smuggling of the precious metal including gold,” highlighting the critical need for continued and enhanced enforcement operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
