{"id":8375,"date":"2025-08-21T07:21:47","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T07:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zimgbcnews.co.zw\/?p=8375"},"modified":"2025-08-21T07:21:48","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T07:21:48","slug":"zimbabwe-u20-mens-volleyball-team-heads-to-egypt-after-u19-region-5-sweep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/zimgbcnews.co.zw\/?p=8375","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe U20 Men\u2019s Volleyball Team Heads to Egypt After U19 Region 5 Sweep"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sithembinkosi L Jiyane<br>Sports Reporter<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200eZimbabwe\u2019s Under-20 men\u2019s volleyball team is set to spike their way onto the continental stage at the African Nations Volleyball Championship in Egypt, building on the momentum created by the country\u2019s golden U19 squad.<br>\u200e<br>\u200eThe U19 side recently dominated the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games, sweeping every opponent in straight sets to clinch gold.<br>\u200e<br>\u200eThey opened with a 3\u20130 demolition of Malawi, followed it up with another 3\u20130 rout of Angola, and outplayed South Africa twice, first in the group stages and again in the final, with commanding 3\u20130 victories.<br>\u200e<br>\u200eZimbabwe Volleyball Association Vice President Brian Manuel hailed the U19 champions for their clean sheet and consistency, noting that their performance laid the foundation for the U20 team\u2019s continental challenge.<br>\u200e<br>\u200e\u201cIn the Region 5 Games, we played against Malawi and beat them 3\u20130. We also played against Angola and beat them 3\u20130. Then we faced South Africa in the group stage and beat them 3\u20130. In the final, we met South Africa again and beat them 3\u20130&#8243;.<br>\u200e<br>\u200eThe U20 squad earned their Egypt berth through the U19 team\u2019s stellar run, marking a natural progression from regional dominance to continental competition.<br>\u200e<br>\u200e\u201cOur boys earned this opportunity after an excellent performance in the recent Region 5 Games, where they won gold and didn\u2019t even drop a set,\u201d Manuel explained.<br>\u200e<br>\u200eRecognising the players\u2019 skill at the net, attacking prowess, and defensive strength, officials are focused on keeping the squad together and giving them exposure at higher-level competitions.<br>\u200e<br>\u200e\u201cThe boys are very, very good and very promising, to a point that we want to keep them together, we want to expose them more&#8221;.<br>\u200e<br>\u200e\u201cTheir main ticket, rather, would then be that of winning the Region 5 Games. They performed exceptionally, and now we want them to compete at the highest level in Africa,\u201d he concluded.<br>\u200e<br>\u200eTo support this journey, the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association has organised a fundraising dinner on 29 August at Cresta Jameson Hotel in Harare, bringing together volleyball legends, stakeholders, and fans to rally behind the rising stars as they prepare to serve, spike, and block their way through Egypt.<br>\u200e<br>\u200eWith their flawless Region 5 sweep as a springboard, Zimbabwe\u2019s U20 squad is ready to serve, spike, and block their way through the African Nations Championship in Egypt.
