HARARE, Zimbabwe \u2013 The United States Embassy in Zimbabwe has temporarily halted most routine visa processing, affecting tourist, business, student, and exchange visitor applications, according to a State Department memo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What Visa Services Are Affected?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The suspension, effective immediately, applies to:
\u2714 B1\/B2 (Tourist & Business) visas
\u2714 F1 (Student) visas
\u2714 J1 (Exchange Visitor) visas<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, official and diplomatic (C-3) visas will continue to be processed. Existing valid U.S. visas remain unaffected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why the Sudden Suspension?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A senior State Department official cited Zimbabwe\u2019s 10.57% B1\/B2 visa overstay rate\u2014equating to 709 individuals\u2014as a key reason. The U.S. also raised concerns over:

\u26a0 Zimbabwe\u2019s refusal to sign a “safe third country” agreement (which would require asylum seekers to apply from transit nations)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The administration is always working to prevent visa overstay and misuse,” the official stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bigger Picture: U.S. Travel Restrictions<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This move follows:
\ud83d\udd39 June\u2019s reinstatement of the U.S. travel ban (affecting 19 countries, including Zimbabwe)

\ud83d\udd39 A new pilot program requiring Malawian & Zambian applicants to pay refundable bonds (up to US$15,000)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So far, only Eswatini, Rwanda, and South Sudan have agreed to accept deported third-country migrants under U.S. terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zimbabwean applicants must now wait for further updates. The U.S. Embassy has not specified when normal processing will resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
