HARARE \u2013 A 27-year-old Bulawayo woman has been remanded in custody until June 25 after appearing in court on human trafficking charges for allegedly attempting to sell her newborn baby through a Facebook group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Christable Muringani appeared before Harare magistrate Tilda Mazhande on Wednesday, accused of conspiring with 20-year-old Tabeth Chenyika to facilitate the illegal handover of the infant just days after giving birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shocking Allegations<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prosecutors told the court that Muringani allegedly used social media platforms to arrange the unlawful transaction. Chenyika, believed to have assisted in the alleged scheme, was granted US$200 bail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The accused persons conspired to hand over the newborn child unlawfully,” said prosecutor Sharon Mashavira.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“This is a serious offense that violates the child’s fundamental rights.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bail Denied for Mother<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Magistrate Mazhande denied Muringani bail, citing the seriousness of the charges and the need to protect the infant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The nature of these allegations requires that the accused remain in custody while investigations continue,” Mazhande ruled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Child Protection Concerns<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The case has sparked outrage among child rights activists, who warn that social media is becoming an alarming platform for illegal adoptions and child trafficking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“This disturbing trend of using social media to sell babies must stop,” said Tendai Mhaka, director of Childline Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We urge authorities to strengthen monitoring of online platforms and for communities to report suspicious activities.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The infant is currently in protective custody as investigations continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
