\u201cWhy equate lighter skin with beauty? These products expose users to dangerous ingredients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Medical professionals warn of dire consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe chemicals in these products damage the skin and increase susceptibility to infections, cancers, and other malignancies,\u201d explained dermatologist Dr. Maphios Siamuchembu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Zimbabwean legislators also sounded a alarm over the increased use of skin lightening creams by both men and women in the country. They pushed for stiffer laws to stop the import of such products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The issue was raised by a Harare Member of Parliament Hon. Kiven Mutimbanyoka who called for harsher penalties for vendors who sell skin lightening creams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI am imploring this august house to come up with a very concrete programme together with the Ministry of Health to teach people about the danger of using skin lightening creams. The education must include both men and women\u201d, said Midlands MP Perseverance Zhou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another MP called for public education campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers associated with these products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe need to approach the issue wisely, but most importantly there is need for us to raise awareness about the dangers associated with these products\u201d, the MP noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daniel Malokele Tsiye, the Hwange Central MP had a different view to those using skin lightening\/ bleaching, to be understood if they are trying to give any message to the society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ZIMRA, the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe and the Ministry of Health and Child Care were urged to ensure that prohibited products do not reach consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
