Taliban authorities have arrested 14 individuals in northern Afghanistan for playing musical instruments and singing, activities that have been strictly banned since the group regained power in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The arrests occurred on Thursday night in the capital of Takhar province, where the group had gathered in a private home. Provincial police confirmed the detentions in a statement on Saturday, stating that the individuals had taken advantage of the nighttime to hold the gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The accused were playing music and singing, causing a public disturbance,” the police statement said. “They are currently under investigation for violating Islamic laws and Taliban regulations.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since their return to power, the Taliban have imposed severe restrictions on music, entertainment, and cultural expressions deemed un-Islamic. Public performances, broadcasting music, and even playing instruments in private have been criminalized in many regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Local sources in Takhar reported growing frustration among residents over the harsh enforcement of these bans. “People just want to celebrate and express themselves, but even private gatherings are being targeted,” said one resident, speaking on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This latest crackdown highlights the Taliban’s continued strict interpretation of Islamic law, despite international condemnation and calls for greater personal freedoms in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
