Harare \u2013 Five women operating a brothel under the guise of a beauty and massage parlor were fined and given suspended jail sentences by the Harare Magistrates Court on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The group, which used social media to solicit clients, charged US$20 per sexual encounter at their establishment located at 30 Helm Avenue in Harare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Defendants Plead Guilty<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The accused\u2014Charity Makoni (30), Josephine Tapi (22), Miriam Bimha, Shyline Sibanda, and their employer Cassandra Mavhura\u2014pleaded guilty to soliciting for prostitution before Magistrate Ruth Moyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Each was fined US$30 and handed a two-month prison sentence, which was wholly suspended on condition of good behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The accused admitted to offering sexual services under the pretence of running a massage parlour,” said prosecutor Noosa Kangara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police Raid Followed Tip-Offs<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The court heard that police raided the premises after receiving reports that the parlour was facilitating prostitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mavhura, the alleged ringleader, faces additional charges, including living off the proceeds of prostitution, procuring for prostitution, and violating the Shop Licences Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Legal and Social Implications<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The case highlights ongoing concerns over illicit operations disguised as legitimate businesses in Zimbabwe\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“This ruling sends a clear message that such activities will not be tolerated,” said a law enforcement official familiar with the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The women were released following sentencing, with authorities warning of stricter enforcement against similar establishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mavhura\u2019s additional charges will be heard in a separate proceeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
