Those born in the 1980s and used to listen to Radio 2 on the national broadcaster will remember the hit song by Jonah Moyo and the Deverangwena Jazz Band, Solo na Mutsai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now the Gutu Rural District Council (RDC) is contemplating the naming of a street in Mpandawana Growth Point after this iconic song “Solo naMutsai” by legendary musician Jonah Moyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This song which was released in 1982, tells the love story of Solo and Mutsai, which significantly highlighted the area during its time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jonah Moyo recently received an honorary degree from Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) in recognition of his contributions to music and cultural commentary. The proposal to name a street after his famous song has been well-received, with Gutu RDC CEO Alexander Mtembwa expressing strong support for the initiative. He described it as a commendable way to honor the cultural significance of the song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The proposal will be presented at the Gutu RDC’s full council meeting scheduled for November 25. If approved, this move would make Gutu RDC the first local authority in Zimbabwe to honor a local artist in such a manner, marking a significant step in recognizing the contributions of musicians to the cultural landscape of the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The potential naming of a street after “Solo naMutsai” reflects a growing appreciation for local artists and their impact on community identity. As the council prepares to make a decision, the outcome could pave the way for similar recognitions across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
