A devastating fire sparked by an electrical fault destroyed the belongings of 13 Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) students at Appleseed boarding house near Yeukai shops in Mucheke on September 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It is truly heart-breaking to see our friends in such a difficult situation,” said the GZU Student Representative Council (SRC) in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fire, which occurred around 7 pm, left the students with nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Thirteen girls from a boarding house in Yeukai have lost everything in a devastating fire\u2026 The university is providing them with temporary accommodation and meals,” the SRC added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Godknows Mugondo, the boarding house owner, confirmed the incident, suspecting a “night spark from the sockets” as the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We suspect the fire was caused by an electrical fault\u2026 We made a police report indicating the documents were destroyed,” Mugondo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
GZU Vice Chancellor Professor Rungano Zvobgo has promised to support the affected students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“GZU has requested to take the victims to Mucheke Campus and we acceded to their request\u2026 The university will help recover academic documents destroyed in the fire,” Mugondo explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Local authorities, including Masvingo City Mayor Alec Tabe and MP Martin Mureri, have pledged assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I contacted Mayor Tabe and MP Mureri, and they promised to help mobilize assistance,” Mugondo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The SRC appealed for donations, saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Every donation, no matter how small, can make a significant difference. As stated in Acts 20:35, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ Let us come together as a community to support our fellow students.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The university has provided temporary shelter and meals, but the students still need support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Donations, including food and clothes, have started pouring in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to those who have donated\u2026 Your kindness and generosity are a beacon of hope for these girls in their time of need,” the SRC said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
