The Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) is demanding the release of Nicole Chabata, an O’ Level student who has been detained since June 16 for allegedly participating in an unsanctioned gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chabata, who is due to sit for her exams next month, is among 80 opposition activists arrested at a gathering to celebrate the Day of the African Child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ZINASU gender secretary Lillian Tinotenda Muhwandavaka said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The actions taken against Nicole reflect a disturbing trend of the regime trying to silence young voices that seek to promote social justice and women’s rights.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Muhwandavaka emphasized that Chabata’s detention has disrupted her education and risks her missing her exams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It is disheartening that a student meant to sit for her O’ level exams is going through such an unjust conviction.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ZINASU stands in solidarity with Chabata and demands her release, stating,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We demand that these cases be handled seriously so that Nicole can focus on her studies and sit for upcoming exams comfortably, without the weight of a wrongful conviction.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The detention of Chabata and others has become a rallying point for the release of government critics jailed for their activism against poor governance and injustice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
