In a significant decision, the High Court of Zimbabwe has ordered writer and lawyer Petina Gappah to pay $18,000 in damages to prominent lawyer and politician Fadzayi Mahere, following a protracted defamation lawsuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The defamatory statements were vile and persistent, justifying the substantial damages awarded to Mahere,” said Justice Mafusire in the written judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mahere claimed that Gappah’s statements had significantly harmed her reputation, leading to the lawsuit in October 2018. Despite initially contesting the claims, Gappah admitted liability shortly before the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The legal battle was long, arduous, and acrimonious,” Justice Mafusire noted, highlighting the intense legal strategies employed by both accomplished lawyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition to the damages, Gappah must pay 5% interest per annum and cover Mahere’s legal costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
