Villagers in Tsholotsho, Zimbabwe, are struggling to access water due to the El Nino-induced drought, forcing them to travel long distances to fetch water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The unavailability of boreholes has hugely affected us,” said Jazz Sibanda, ward 8 councillor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“There are many villagers in ward 8 and they cannot get enough water.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sibanda explained that the few boreholes in the area dry up during the dry summer seasons, leaving villagers with no choice but to seek alternative sources. “In Garia, we have three boreholes only, and villagers now have to go all the way to the Manzamnyama River to get water.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Libion Sibanda, Tsholotsho North legislator, emphasized the severity of the issue. “The water shortage is problematic, not only in ward 8, but the whole of Tsholotsho, but ward 8 is the worst affected\u2026 People are now forced to travel long distances just to access water.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sibanda highlighted the inadequate supply from the available boreholes, saying, “Villagers are only allowed to get five buckets each from the boreholes for two days.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Councillor Sibanda proposed unblocking the water source for Cijima Dam, which could benefit several wards in Tsholotsho. “We have tried talking to the council to solve this problem that we are facing, but no action has been taken.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
