{"id":3974,"date":"2024-08-26T15:23:15","date_gmt":"2024-08-26T15:23:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zimgbcnews.co.zw\/?p=3974"},"modified":"2024-08-26T15:23:17","modified_gmt":"2024-08-26T15:23:17","slug":"contaminated-maize-sparks-fear-in-zambia-after-400-dogs-die","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/zimgbcnews.co.zw\/?p=3974","title":{"rendered":"Contaminated Maize Sparks Fear in Zambia After 400 Dogs Die"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><br>International Correspondent<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zambia&#8217;s Health Minister, Elijah Muchima, has announced that approximately 400 dogs have died in the past month due to contaminated maize, sparking concerns for human health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The test results are of great concern due to the several health implications for the population,&#8221; Muchima said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minister revealee that half of the 25 samples taken from milling companies contained high levels of aflatoxins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that aflatoxins can cause liver cancer in humans, prompting authorities to launch an investigation into the nation&#8217;s maize supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are still investigating how wide the toxic maize has spread,&#8221; Muchima said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;affected batches&#8221; of maize meal have been recalled and seizure notices have been issued to &#8220;affected companies.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opposition MP Sunday Chanda expressed concern, saying,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Govt says 400 dogs have died due to toxins in some brands of meal. I\u2019m a victim too.
