Three Karoi residents, Nigbert Muza (35), Cephas Muza (22), and Joakim Muza (65), were convicted and sentenced to 10 months in prison for obstructing the course of justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), on May 12, 2024, police officers attempted to arrest Nyasha Muza, who faces rape charges, at the accused’s homestead. However, the officers were attacked and prevented from making the arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The police officers were met with violence and had their handcuffs snatched from them,” said the prosecutor.
“They were also assaulted with fists and burning firewood.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The police returned to the homestead on May 17, 2024, and arrested the trio. One individual, a 17-year-old, was cautioned and discharged due to their age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On passing sentence the Magistrate said: “The actions of the accused were unacceptable and interfered with the administration of justice. They have shown no remorse for their actions.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In mitigation Nigbert Muza said: “We were just trying to protect our family member.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Magistrate responded saying: “Protecting a family member does not give you the right to attack police officers and obstruct justice.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The trio was sentenced to 15 months in prison, with 5 months suspended for 5 years, resulting in 10 months of effective imprisonment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
