A potential rape incident was thwarted thanks to the quick thinking of a church caretaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A source close to the incident at AFM Cowdray Park branch in Bulawayo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Selby Mapungwane, 37, had been trying to lure a six-year-old girl into a toilet when the caretaker intervened, causing him to flee.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the source, Mapungwane had approached the minor at her home and promised to buy her hot chips if she accompanied him to the shops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“He lifted her and headed to a secluded place where he fondled and kissed her,” the source alleged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, when Mapungwane tried to enter the church toilet with the minor, the caretaker confronted him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The caretaker asked him what he was doing, and Mapungwane dropped the child and ran away,” said the source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The minor revealed to the caretaker that Mapungwane had fondled and kissed her, and also knew where he lived. The incident was reported to the police, leading to Mapungwane’s arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bulawayo Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and warned parents against leaving their children alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Leaving children alone exposes them to risks such as rape, indecent assault, or kidnapping. Parents should ensure they leave their children in the care of someone they trust,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The caretaker’s swift action has been praised for preventing a potential rape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We are grateful for the caretaker’s intervention, which saved the minor from a traumatic experience,” said the source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
