Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has urged protesters to stand down after three days of demonstrations against the country’s deepening cost of living crisis turned violent, resulting in at least seven deaths and over 700 arrests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“My dear Nigerians, especially our youth, I have heard you loud and clear,” President Tinubu said in a televised address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I understand your pain and frustration, and I want to assure you that we are working tirelessly to address the challenges facing our nation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The protests, which began on Thursday, were organized by civil society groups and opposition parties, who blame President Tinubu’s economic reforms for the skyrocketing prices and hardships faced by Nigerians since he took office in May 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, President Tinubu defended his policies, including the removal of the petrol subsidy and the depegging of the local currency from the dollar, saying they were necessary to stabilize the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I want to assure Nigerians that our economic reforms are designed to create a more sustainable and prosperous future for our country,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“However, I also recognize that the transition period has been difficult for many, and we are working to mitigate the effects.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
President Tinubu also acknowledged that the protests had been hijacked by looters in some areas, and appealed for calm to allow for dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Let us work together to find solutions to our challenges, rather than resorting to violence and destruction,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I am committed to engaging with all stakeholders to address the concerns of Nigerians and find a way forward.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite the president’s appeal, protesters have vowed to continue their demonstrations, saying they will not back down until their demands are met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
